The expenses of your journey to work can be declared as work-related expenses in your tax return.
You should always declare the shortest distance between your home and workplace; otherwise the tax and revenue office may dispute your claim. The route should be entered in kilometres and can be rounded up to the nearest full kilometre. Based on the input data, our tool calculates the basic distance. Due to inaccurate address information, some errors might occur during this step. If the number seems too high or too low, you should double-check it with the help of, e.g., Google Maps and adjust it if need be.
Based on your declared working days, sick days, and holidays, our tool calculates the total number of days in this year that you travelled to work.
The tax and revenue office normally accepts 230 days working days, based on a 5-day work week.
The standard deductible for travel costs to the workplace is 30 cent per kilometre. The kilometres of the basic distance (not the round trip!) is then multiplied by the standard deduction times the number of working days.
Our tool calculates the sum-total of costs, based on your entries for number of days and distance, and claims it as your travel cost expense.
The standard deduction can be claimed, regardless of your preferred mode of transportation. This means that you can deduct the standard travel cost amount, no matter how you travel to work.
If you own a monthly or yearly public transportation pass, you can add it on top of the standard kilometre deductible. The tax and revenue office then takes the higher amount into account.
Additional meal allowances cannot be taken into account for normal working days.
If you did not travel to your workplace regularly throughout the year, it is possible to input several time periods, e.g., in case of gaps which were not related to sick days or holidays. The same is true if you changed jobs, for example. To do so, you should simply adjust the dates and click on "New Entry". If you do not have a regular 5-day work week and your working time varies, an average estimate can also be entered here.
