To enable the online submission of a tax return, either a tax number or a tax identification number (TIN) is necessary.
Where can I find my tax number or TIN?
Every person registered with the local authorities in Germany is issued a TIN. You can find it on the income tax statement from your employer, for instance, or sometimes also on the monthly pay slips.
The tax number can be found on the upper left-hand side of the income tax statement from the previous year. If no previous income tax statement is available, you can enquire about your tax number at your respective tax and revenue office. However, submitting a tax return without a tax number is also possible. If our online tool does not accept your tax number, you can simply omit it. Your tax and revenue office will be able to identify you thanks to your TIN.
What do I do if I do not have a tax number?
If you do not have a tax number, untick the box "I have a tax number for the tax and revenue office XY. It has the following format: 13/XXX/XXXXX". When your tax return is submitted, the tax and revenue office will issue you a tax number automatically.
