What happens when the amount of my income in the tax declaration does not match the amount in the tax assessment notice?
The information on your certificate of wage tax deduction is always automatically sent to the respective tax office by your employer(s). That means the tax office always refers to this information when calculating your refund/back-payment.
Entering your income information in our tool helps us create a prognosis. Our calculation is based on what you enter.
You can check if you’ve entered the correct information about your income by comparing what you entered to your tax assessment notice. Here you’ll find the line “Einkünfte aus nichtselbstständiger Arbeit” at the end of the first page and/or the beginning of the second page.
Compare the amount of each item that you entered in our tool in the “Income” step in line “Bruttojahreslohn”.
If you notice a deviation here, there can be several reasons for it. The best way to clarify this is to contact your (former) employer and/or your respective tax office.
The certificate of wage tax deduction was forgotten
Normally, you receive a certificate of wage tax deduction for the entire year. You can normally find the time period of the respective certificate of wage tax deduction in the upper right. In some cases, it may be that you have more than one certificate of wage tax deduction for a single year:
- You changed jobs: in this case, you will receive a separate certificate of wage tax deduction from each employer. These naturally need to be entered into our tool (as “additional income”).
- Your employer changed payroll offices during the calendar year: In this case, you may also receive multiple certificates of wage tax deduction.
Typo when entering information
Typos, reversed numbers or incorrectly used commas when entering your income naturally have a great impact on the calculation. For example, when you enter an annual income of €20,00 instead of €20.000,00.
Adjustments made by the employer
This is seldom the case - but it can happen! If your employer made an adjustment and/or changes something on your annual certificate of wage tax deduction after you’ve already received your printout, then you have outdated information. However, if your employer sends an updated certificate of wage tax deduction to the tax office in the meantime, then it will appear as a deviation here.
Erroneous/missing submission from your employer
There are few cases where your employer and/or their payroll office doesn’t send any data to the tax office. In this case, please contact your employer and inform the tax office as well!
